Walk into any big-box store in Kelowna and you can grab a packaged blind off the shelf for a low price and have it up the same afternoon. Or you can have blinds made to the exact size of your windows and installed for you. Both are legitimate choices — and the cheaper one isn't always the wrong one.

This is an honest look at the real differences, including the situations where ready-made is perfectly fine and the ones where it tends to disappoint.

What "custom" actually means

"Custom" sometimes sounds like a premium upsell, but it really just describes how the blind is made. A ready-made (or "stock") blind is manufactured in standard sizes and sold in a package; you pick the closest size and, if needed, cut it down or live with the gaps. A custom blind is built to your window's exact measurements, in the fabric, opacity, colour, and operating style you choose, and is typically measured and installed by the company that supplies it.

The difference shows up in four places: fit, materials and longevity, options, and the service around it.

Fit and light gaps

This is the most visible difference. Windows are rarely perfectly square — and in older Kelowna homes especially, openings can be out by a noticeable margin. A ready-made blind comes in fixed widths, so you round to the nearest size and end up with gaps at the sides where light (and, in a bedroom, the early summer sun) leaks through. A custom blind is built to your opening, so the fit is clean and the light gaps are minimal.

With ready-made, you choose from whatever sizes and styles the store stocks. With custom, you get the full range — specialty shapes, large or hard-to-reach windows, motorization, child-safe cordless lifts, and a much wider selection of fabrics and finishes.

Two practical points often tip the decision:

• Warranty. Custom blinds usually come with a manufacturer's warranty; an off-the-shelf package typically doesn't offer much beyond a return window.
• Installation. Custom usually includes professional measuring and installation, so the blinds are measured right and hung level. Ready-made is a DIY job — fine if you're handy, frustrating if a window is awkward or high.

When ready-made is genuinely fine

We're not going to pretend custom is the answer for every window. Off-the-shelf blinds make good sense when:

• You're outfitting a rental and want a cheap, replaceable option.
• You need a temporary fix while you plan the real thing.
• The window is a standard size and a small light gap doesn't bother you.
• You're working to a tight budget and just need basic coverage now.

In those cases, ready-made does the job. The trouble starts when people buy stock blinds for a long-term home with non-standard windows and end up replacing them sooner than they expected — paying twice.

The Kelowna reality

Two things make this decision a little different here. First, our older housing stock means a lot of windows aren't true to standard sizes, so the fit advantage of custom is more pronounced than it would be in a brand-new subdivision. Second, the Okanagan sun is hard on materials — strong UV and big temperature swings test fabrics and hardware year after year, so durability earns its keep.

None of that means you must go custom. It means the gap between "cheap now" and "right for the long run" is wider here than in a milder climate.

• Buying for the long term on price alone. A bargain blind you replace in two years isn't a bargain.
